What does GEO mean?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It is the work of helping AI systems find, understand and accurately describe your business when people ask questions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and other AI services.
AI search visibility is the broader result: whether your business appears, how it is described, which sources support the answer and whether AI recommends it. GEO tools and AI visibility software help teams observe parts of that picture, but they do not all measure the same thing.
A mention is not the same as a recommendation
Your company can appear in an AI answer without being recommended. It might be listed as an alternative, quoted as a source, described neutrally or even mentioned in a warning. Mention counts are useful, but they do not tell the whole story.
A recommendation answers a more commercial question: when a buyer asks for help, does the AI actually present your business as a good option? A strong measurement program should tell you which result it is reporting instead of mixing mentions, citations, sentiment and recommendations into one unclear score.
Four common ways AI visibility tools measure your brand
A platform may combine several approaches. The important thing is to keep the results separate enough that your team knows what changed and what did not.
| Approach | What it tells you | Why it may matter |
|---|---|---|
| Search a large answer index | Whether your brand, competitors or topics appear in a large collection of previously gathered AI answers. | Useful for broad market discovery, category trends and finding citations at scale. |
| Track selected prompts | How your brand appears when chosen questions are asked again on a regular schedule. | Useful for ongoing monitoring, reports and watching a larger question set over time. |
| Measure buyer recommendations | Whether AI recommends your business when buyers ask questions that reflect real purchase intent. | Useful when you want a clear starting point, competitor comparison and a way to check results again later. |
| Check factual accuracy | Whether AI gets important details about your company, products, prices and leadership right. | Useful for finding wrong, missing or conflicting information before it affects trust. |
How current platforms describe their focus
These examples come from each company's published materials. They explain positioning, not independently measured performance.
- ReadableIQ combines buyer-question monitoring in Answers with deeper recommendation, business-fact and competitor analysis in Intelligence. It is designed to help a business move from seeing the result to deciding what to improve and measuring again later.
- OtterlyAI publishes prompt allowances, daily tracking, visibility, citations and GEO auditing, with engine coverage that varies between plans and add-ons. OtterlyAI source.
- Profound publishes answer-engine visibility, citations, sentiment, competitive analysis and a separate factual-accuracy product. Profound source.
- Peec AI publishes AI search analytics based on prompts, projects and selected models, with plan-dependent reporting and referral features. Peec AI source.
- Ahrefs Brand Radar combines a large AI visibility index with custom prompts, mentions and citations inside the wider Ahrefs search-data platform. Ahrefs source.
- Semrush publishes AI visibility, competitor, narrative, prompt-gap and source analysis within its broader marketing platform. Semrush source.
Where ReadableIQ is different
Many AI visibility tools tell you where your brand appears. ReadableIQ is designed to help you understand whether AI recommends your business, why, what to improve, and whether those changes worked.
ReadableIQ Answers is $49/month and follows important buyer questions over time. ReadableIQ Intelligence is $500/month and measures how your business appears across OpenAI, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. It identifies competitive and information gaps and helps prioritize what to improve.
ReadableIQ then compares the result with what AI can learn from your public business information and what appears to be stronger for competitors. It turns those findings into priorities your team can review, implement and verify. It does not claim to expose proprietary ranking algorithms or guarantee recommendations.
A practical buying checklist
Before choosing GEO tools or AI recommendation monitoring software, ask the vendor to show how the product would answer these questions for your business.
- Which buyer questions will you track, and can we review them before measurement starts?
- Which AI platforms, countries and languages are included in the price?
- Does the score represent mentions, citations, sentiment, rankings or actual recommendations?
- Can we inspect the underlying AI answers and supporting sources?
- Will the product show what AI gets wrong or does not know about our company?
- Does it help us decide what to improve, or only report movement?
- Can we measure again later using the same setup so the comparison is meaningful?
Measure the outcome you actually care about
If your goal is broad awareness tracking, a large answer index or high-volume prompt monitor may be the right starting point. If your goal is to know whether AI recommends your business and what to improve next, make sure the platform measures recommendations directly and helps you act on the result.
No GEO tool can guarantee how an independent AI system will describe, cite or recommend a company. The useful promise is more practical: clear measurement, honest evidence, specific improvements and a consistent way to see whether the result changed.
